COMPREHENSION

Reading comprehension is the ability to get meaning from written text.

It is the compilation of all the skills that make up the reading/writing process. Most children have no problem with comprehension.Take them to a movie and they will tell you everything that happened until you beg them to stop.

Their problem is with the reading.

STEPS training will teach you to analyze a child's "reading comprehension" problem, and determine if the problem is phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, or vocabulary and then target the skill that needs strengthening.

It has been said that teaching a child to read isn't rocket science, and it's not. But knowing where the process has failed, requires knowledge and training.

Text comprehension is an active process dependent on interaction between the text and the reader.

The comprehension strategies below are all purposeful, encouraging children to read for a reason.

Comprehension Monitoring

  • Ask yourself, "What you I know?".
  • Be aware of what you don’t understand.

  • Adjust reading speed as needed.

  • Go back and reread for “fix-up”.

  • Self check at the end.

Use Graphic or Semantic Organizers to Clarify Thinking
  • Draw a diagram or pictorial device that displays relationships.
  • Focus on the interrelationships among facts or ideas, especially in content area reading.
